I Campo Grande Forum – 2022

Event: I Integration Forum of the Municipalities of the Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor

Location: Campo Grande, Brazil

Activity Objective

The main objective of the forum was to promote integration among municipalities and generate diplomatic agreements that facilitate the economic and tourist development of the cities and subnational territories traversed by the Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor.

Activity Description

Presided over by Mr. Reinaldo Azambuja, Governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, the forum was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso do Sul, along with the State Government, the International Parliamentary Front of the Bioceanic Corridor, and the Association of Municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul (Assomasul). It brought together important political figures, businesspeople, and representatives of international organizations.

Signed Agreements: During the inauguration, agreements on “Commercial, Economic, and Productive Cooperation” and “Institutional Cooperation for the Establishment of a Tourist Promotion Committee” were signed between municipalities in northern Chile, northern Argentina, Paraguayan Chaco, and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Diplomatic Agreements: The established agreements include the exchange of information on production, technical studies, permanent meetings between authorities, cooperation in projects, and execution and follow-up plans. Interest in studies for leveraging railway tourism and the creation of commercial contacts and multilateral financing was also highlighted.

Presidency and Participants

Presided over by Governor Reinaldo Azambuja of Mato Grosso do Sul, the event included the participation of authorities from the South American countries involved in the Corridor. Attendees reaffirmed that the forum represents a milestone in concrete integration, with the convergence of interests from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay.

Impact of the Bioceanic Corridor

The construction of the Bioceanic Corridor will involve the opening of new border crossings in Brazil and Paraguay, connecting Mato Grosso do Sul with the Paraguayan Chaco and facilitating road access to northern Argentina and Chile. This will foster regional tourism, promoting greater cultural and academic exchange.

During the two-day event, the following Groups were held:

  • Group 1: Export Experiences and Trade Potential (Plenary Room)
  • Group 2: Bioceanic Corridor, Trade and Investment Opportunities (Plenary Room)
  • Group 3: Ports of Chile, Argentina, and Brazil (Plenary Room)
  • Group 4: Innovation and Institutional Support (Room 1)
  • Group 5: Mining (Plenary Room)
  • Group 6: Energy and Fuel (Room 2)
  • Group 7: Tourism, Connectivity, and Culture (Room 3)

Conclusion and Next Steps

It was agreed that the Second Integration Forum will be held in Antofagasta, Chile, in the second half of the year. This continuity will allow further progress on the objectives set and strengthen cooperation among the municipalities of the Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor.
